HOW TO REGISTER (preregistration is required NLT than March 1st for the March 15th clinic OR NLT than April 21st for the May 4th clinic . If you are registered for a race, registration is an email with info on who is attending or submit the form to the right (by thIf you are not registered for a race, you can register for class ONLINE using the active link. The May 4th Navigation Clinic is cancelled due to lack of registration prior to April 21st.
If you are not ALREADY registered for a race in 2014, use the active.com link to register on-line. If you are registered for an event, just submit the form to the right.
In this class, you will learn to use your Lensatic and/or Orienteering Compass, terrain association, bearings and pace count to clear your course. The practice course is about 3 miles and will help dial it all in.
LOCATION Acorns Resort, Milford, KS. See Directions Take your 1st right after entering the resort and go to Shelter at end of the that road.
DATE AND TIMES Mar 15th, 2013 1-5pm OR May 4th, 2013 1-5pm
WHAT YOU WILL NEED Compass, UTM (1:24,000) tool, writing utensil, highlighters, fine point permanent marker, long pants, hiking or tennis shoes, water/hydration pack, snacks if desired. If you don't have a UTM tool or compass, there are a limited number to borrow.
WHAT WILL BE COVERED Adventure Racing, teamwork, UTM coordinates, terrain association, compass readings, pace counts, map reading, strategy, etc.
STRUCTURE OF CASS We will spend about 1.5 hours learning the basics & 2 hours in field practice. Dress according to the weather, we will be outside.
COST This class if free if your team is registered for the Thumper, Break Up, Sunflower State Games AR or O Challenge. If you not registered for any of these races, cost is $25 per person.
WHY TAKE THIS CLASS? If you have never raced an AR before, or if you have raced and asked yourself . . . * how did the other teams get ahead of us when we should be faster? * why are the maps so hard to read and understand? * why couldn't we find that point that several other teams did? * why did our team have to discuss every checkpoint direction/strategy? * how come our team travelled alot further than some other teams?
